Have You Considered CBD Oil for Your Pets?

Updated: Jul 8, 2022

You’ve definitely heard plenty about individuals using CBD (cannabidiol), but have you ever heard of pets using CBD products? CBD for dogs is more than just a pet wellness trend; it’s something that can actually have a positive influence on your furry friend’s life.

CBD is found in both cannabis and hemp, but it does not provide the same psychoactive effects as marijuana because it is free of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD impacts the central and peripheral nervous systems of dogs by interacting with their endocannabinoid receptors.

Dog owners have reported numerous benefits of giving CBD products to their dogs. It has anti-inflammatory properties, anti-nausea effects, anti-convulsant and antiemetic properties, and it can help quell anxiety. It can be used to help control seizures and even has the potential to help slow tumor growth. Some even use it on their dogs for cardiac benefits or for appetite stimulation. Some dog owners use it to help treat pain; it can be especially useful for neuropathic pain. If your dog struggles with stress and anxiety or has tics, tremors, or seizures, CBD might be a good option for them. CBD can also help promote homeostasis in the body.

Much like humans can have some side effects if they take an incorrect dosage, dogs may experience side effects if they receive too much CBD. The effects range from dry mouth and drowsiness to lowered blood pressure. Because CBD for pets has not been FDA-approved yet, dosing for dogs is unclear. It’s important to speak with your veterinarian first and start with small doses to see how it affects your dog. However, CBD doesn’t have a known toxicity level, so an overdose from CBD isn’t considered possible.

It’s important to note that there have been only a few formal studies on how CBD affects dogs. You should talk with your vet before trying out CBD products on your dog.
